The animal kingdom (Animalia) is one of the five kingdoms of life and contains an estimated 7–10 million species — the vast majority of which have yet to be discovered and classified. Animals are multicellular, eukaryotic organisms that consume other organisms for energy, and most can move voluntarily at some point in their lives.
Vertebrates — animals with a backbone — are divided into five major groups: Fish (the most diverse vertebrate group, including sharks, salmon, and seahorses); Amphibians (frogs, salamanders, and caecilians — animals that can live in water and on land); Reptiles (crocodilians, lizards, snakes, and turtles — cold-blooded and scaly); Birds (warm-blooded, feathered, egg-laying vertebrates — the only living dinosaurs); and Mammals (warm-blooded vertebrates that nurse young with milk — from mice to blue whales).
Despite our fascination with vertebrates, invertebrates — animals without a backbone — account for over 95% of all animal species. This enormous group includes insects (over 1 million species), arachnids (spiders, scorpions), crustaceans (crabs, lobsters), mollusks (octopuses, clams), and many more. The humble beetle alone has more species than all vertebrates combined. Without invertebrates — especially insects and other pollinators — virtually all terrestrial ecosystems would collapse within years.
The natural world is full of astonishing extremes: the blue whale's heart is as large as a small car and its arteries are wide enough for a human to swim through. A hummingbird's heart beats up to 1,200 times per minute. The mantis shrimp has 16 types of photoreceptors (humans have 3) and strikes with the force of a bullet. The electric eel can generate up to 860 volts. The mimic octopus can impersonate over 15 different species. These facts illustrate how evolution produces solutions far beyond human imagination.
The Earth is currently in the midst of what scientists call the sixth mass extinction — a period of biodiversity loss driven primarily by human activity, including habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, and invasive species. An estimated 1 million species are currently threatened with extinction. Conservation efforts, protected areas, and reintroduction programs have saved some species from the brink, including the bald eagle, mountain gorilla, and Arabian oryx.
Q: Why do octopuses have blue blood?
A: Because their blood uses hemocyanin (copper-based) instead of hemoglobin (iron-based) to carry oxygen.
Hemocyanin is less efficient at carrying oxygen than hemoglobin under warm conditions, but works better in cold, low-oxygen environments like the deep ocean. When oxygenated, hemocyanin turns blue; when deoxygenated, it becomes colorless. Horseshoe crabs and many other invertebrates also have blue blood.

Saltwater crocodiles have a bite force of approximately 3,700 pounds per square inch (psi) — the strongest measured bite force of any animal. They are opportunistic ambush predators that will attack large mammals, including humans. They inhabit river mouths, estuaries, and coastal areas from India to northern Australia.

A: Bats fill a unique ecological role as nocturnal aerial predators and pollinators, and their flight evolved independently from birds.
Bat wings evolved from modified forelimbs over 50+ million years ago — completely independently from bird flight. Bats are critical to ecosystems: insect-eating bats consume billions of insects nightly (reducing crop pests); fruit bats are major pollinators and seed dispersers in tropical forests. Many plants and animals are critically dependent on bats for survival.
The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest animal on Earth, reaching speeds of over 389 km/h (242 mph) during a hunting dive (stoop). The fastest land animal is the Cheetah at up to 120 km/h (75 mph). The fastest fish is the Black Marlin at around 130 km/h (80 mph).
Intelligence is difficult to define across species, but great apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans) are generally considered the most intelligent animals after humans. Dolphins, elephants, crows, and octopuses also demonstrate remarkable cognitive abilities including problem-solving, tool use, and self-recognition.
Scientists estimate there are approximately 8.7 million species of eukaryotes on Earth, of which about 7.7 million are animals. Only about 1.5 million animal species have been formally described. The vast majority of undescribed species are insects, marine invertebrates, and microorganisms.
The mosquito is the most dangerous animal to humans, responsible for over 700,000 human deaths per year through diseases like malaria, dengue fever, and Zika. Snakes cause around 100,000 deaths annually. Humans are actually the second-most dangerous animal to other humans.
Sharks are fish, not mammals. They are cartilaginous fish in the class Chondrichthyes. Unlike bony fish, sharks have skeletons made of cartilage. Most sharks give birth to live young (viviparous), but this does not make them mammals — mammals are defined by nursing young with milk, having hair/fur, and being warm-blooded.

Tardigrades (water bears) can survive extreme conditions for decades in a dormant state called cryptobiosis. They can withstand temperatures from -272°C to +150°C, radiation 1,000 times the lethal human dose, the vacuum of space, and pressures six times deeper than the deepest ocean. They are considered the most resilient animals on Earth.
African elephants use their large ears as a thermoregulation system — the ears are filled with blood vessels, and by flapping them, elephants dissipate body heat in hot climates. African elephants have much larger ears than Asian elephants, which live in cooler, more forested environments and require less cooling.
